Christmas scrapping..

Ghostly going ons...

With Hallowe'en rapidly approaching I thought I'd show you how to have some fun with your Hallowe'en photos by adding a ghost or two, so that you  end up with a photo a bit like this:

To create a photo like this you need things:

1. A tripod
2. A photo editing programme which uses layers. I used Photoshop Elements, but I believe GIMP, downloaded free from the internet, is very similar.

To make a ghostly photo you need to take your photos using a tripod. This is to ensure the scene in which your subject is placed remains exactly the same in each photo. You will photograph your model in different places within the same scene.

Then upload you photos to your editing programme.
 Drag one photo on top of the other-you will see the two photos open in the layers palette (right hand column):
In the layers palette click on the opacity tab. You will see an opacity slider-pull the slider to the left reduce the opacity of the top photo. You will notice the subject in both photos start to become transparent. Adjust the slider to the transparency you like. Mine was set at about 50%.

Your two photos should be perfectly aligned, but just to make sure zoom in to check. As you can see these photos are slightly misaligned. If you have that problem you need to find the move tool, (Left had tool bar)click and pull the top photo into alignment.
You then need to flatten the two images: Layer> Flatten.
I decided to convert my resulting photo to black and white.

And then I cropped it to tighten up the composition. So there it is-a ghost photo to use in your scrapping, or mexed media projects!!

LifeBook 11 and 12

So anyway here are weeks 11 and 12 from Lifebook. I'm still keeping up with that each week, as well as the Documented Life Project which I joined late, in June, and of course still scrapping!

 And here is week 12. This was a class by Finnabair, and as you can see is heavily embellished, gessoed, painted and sprayed! good fun stuff!

Lifebook #8 #10


I really am going to catch up on blogging my Lifebook 2014 pages.

Week # 8 was an intuitive painting lesson by Alena Hennessy.  
I love this type of painting-just go with the flow and see what emerges-and this is what did:Week #8

Week #9 was an interview with Claudine Helmuth. there was no lesson as such, which gave people a chance to catch up if they were getting behind.

Week #10 was a lesson by Tamara Laporte involving painting over collage. Here is my effort:

LifeBook 2014

It'sbeen a while since I blogged-I see from my last post that I was up to Week 6 in blogging my Lifebook pages, and yet here we are at Week 20! So I have a lot of catching up to do.

So without further ado, here's my next offering:
Life book Week #7Week 7 was a lesson by Jane Davenport. The focus was on drawing figures with movement, and creating a pop up.

The page is collaged, and has a wee door which, when opened, reveals the pop up:

  I was pretty happy with my leaping figure:

This was a fun class. I love the illustrative style of the leaping figure-it's quite far removed from anything I've done before.

LifeBook 2014 week 6

Week 6 of Lifebook was a lesson from Tamara Laporte-well two lessons really. The lesson was about using the rule of thirds for composition, and also the technique was about using spray inks.  Originally I had done some handwriting on this sample, which was really ugly, so I ended up cutting out a circle to cover up the horrid writing. i wanted to try some very subtle colours of ink for this sample piece.

The main lesson was drawing a face in profile-well almost profile-and again using spray inks. I was pretty happy with my attempt, particularly with the water spots. This was a fun lesson, and my favourite so far in Lifebook 2014.

PaperArtsy #2

For my second project using the new PaperArtsy 12 x 12 Chatsworth papers I decided to do something a bit different. 
So this is what I came up with:

This is a little tri-fold wallet, with a woven front flap.
Inside there is space for some photos in the pocket. and a little envelope for a note, or maybe some gift vouchers.

Now Boarding...

Now Boarding is the Kaisercraft collection I've been working with for Merly Impressions. It is a fabulous travel themed collection, and of course is just made for travel photos. So this, teamed with pocket pages, is the perfect way to scrap holiday photos. If you are anything like me, you arrive back from holidays with a stack of photos, and it's such a shame if those photos languish on your computer unseen.
How easy is it to print off your favourites, pop them into a pocket, and add some journalling cards to record your memories of the holiday.

Paper Artsy #1

I did three PaperArtsy projects in March, all using their new 12 x 12 Chatsworth papers. These papers have a distressed vintage feel with subtle brown/green,/ochre colourways. For my first project I made a monotone layout, sticking to a green palette.

I customised all the embellishments to match the colour palette:

Jelly printing Part 2

Yesterday I posted about the jelly printing plate I made. You can see that post here.
There were a couple of questions in relation to that post so I thought I'd add a bit more info tonight. The jelly plate allows mono-prints to be made. Mono meaning one-so only only print can be made. Any other impressions taken from the plate will all be different. No two impressions will be the same, hence the term mono-print. The print will be a 'one off'.

So now for the basics on making mono-prints using the jelly plate.
First you need some paint-I used Fresco paints from PaperArtsy, a brayer, and some paper-I just used copy paper. Actually,you don't need a brayer-you can brush the paint on, or dribble it, ar apply it any way you like. The brayer does however give a nice smooth finish.

Use the brayer to spread a film of paint onto the jelly plate. 

Place paper onto the pint and burnish down with your hand to take a print. This is what my first print looked like- a basic block of colour:

Add another layer of paint, then use masks, stencils, string, ripped paper-anything really to add pattern to your print. Again, place your paper face down and burnish again:

Add another layer of paint, and another stencil to the jelly plate and take another impression:

You can use string:

Here's what the jelly plate looked like after I took a print- I love that double line. Of course you can take another print from that, but it will be quite faint.

So here are some quick prints I made this when I got home from work today. These are so quick to make!

I'm still at the playing stage, but if you go on Youtube and search for gelli plate printing you will find lots of inspiration. It 's just nice to know you don't need to shell out £30-£40 for a plate-you can make one at home for around £5. And if your plate gets too scratched or pockmarked, you can pop the whole thing into the microwave, melt it down and reset it!

Jelly Printing.

Mono-printing using a Gelli-plate is very popular just now, but the gelli-plate is fairly pricey. I didn't want to shell out on something I wasn't sure if I would get along with, so I decided to make a home-made version to play with to see what all the fuss is about. I have to say mono-printing is a lot FUN!!!

I thought I would share my recipe for making  your own jelly plate, as everything I found on-line referred to American products. So here's a version using UK products.

You need:

1 box of these:

10 bottles of glycerine- 65p from Tesco (that's the cheapest I found)- But since I wrote this post it has been pointed out to me that I could have bought glycerine much cheaper from a chemist.

3 boxes (9 satchets) of powder gelatine (not leaf gelatine) £1.09 each
1. Eat all your Ferrero Rocher chocolates. Then line the plastic container with cling film. This will make it easier to remove your jelly plate when it sets.  OK-you don't HAVE to use a Ferrero Rocher box, but honestly, it's the perfect size and shape, and importantly it has a well fitting lid which will help to keep your plate clean between uses.
2. The recipe uses equal amounts of water and glycerine. So that's 380 ml of glycerine. Dissolve your 9 sachets of gelatine powder in 380 mls of hot water.
3. When your gelatine has dissolved stir in your 10 bottles of glycerine.
4. Allow the mixture to cool a little before pouring it into your mould.
5. Allow to set and cure for 24 hours before use.
6. Use the cling film to help you to remove the set jelly from the mould. 

I used a kitchen knife to cut 1 cm from the top and side of my my jelly plate to make it easier to put it back into the  mould between uses. I also keep the cling film lining to make it easier to remove it each time I want to use it. 

This is what my jellyplate looks like:

When I have finished using it, I just wipe it clean, and put it back into the Ferrero Rocher box with the lid on.  I store it in my craft area-no refrigeration is required providing it's not in a hot environment. Mine is now about 8 weeks old and shows no sign of deterioration. I believe the glycerine acts as a preservative.

Lifebook Week 5 -

Week #5 at Lifebook was a class called Sugar Sugar taught by Marieke Blokland. Marieke draws people with very exaggerated features. It wasn't a style that appealed to me, but I though I'd give it a go. I ended up surprising myself by how much I enjoyed the class. It was quite liberating to create these fantasy faecs, and not try to make things look realistic. -Lots of fun!!
